What I offer
I offer a type of breathwork called Facilitated Breath Repatterning (FBR). It is a form of Conscious Connected Breathwork developed in the 1960s by folks like Stan Grof, but with the novel addition of therapeutic touch, bodywork, parts work, and knowledge of breath mechanics.
Sessions are typically 2 hours, done weekly or bi-weekly over 12 sessions, and held in-person at my breathwork studio in Williamsburg. The session includes a verbal pre-frame, the parts work / breathwork journey itself, and integration.
I spent a year in Bali apprenticing under Edward Dangerfield — a leading breathworker and the founder of FBR — during which I supported hundreds of clients through deep emotional and somatic processing. Since leaving Bali, I've led breathwork at renowned healing centers like Kripalu, Blue Spirit Costa Rica, and Mt Madonna Centre.
I've explored many healing modalities personally trying to recover from an abusive childhood, and I would rank FBR as my #1 modality for emotional, trauma, and somatic release (aside from psychedelic work, which can be less accessible).
I work with all sorts of clients across varying demographics, but because of my own professional background, I tend to work with a lot of high performers because I understand their psychological drives and fears deeply. The other client group I work with extensively are people who have great intellectual awareness from years of talk therapy, and feel like they want a somatic breakthrough.
What you can expect
Deep emotional & somatic processing
I believe talk therapy alone is not enough for most people as we hold a lot of "stuck" pain and emotions in our bodies and psyche. The body keeps the score. Breathwork helps you soften your protective and cognitive parts such that your subconscious emotions and memories can arise to the surface to be processed, much like when we use psychedelic medicines therapeutically.
I find somatic modalities like this tend to produce more breakthroughs, especially for clients who lean more intellectual and sometimes have trouble feeling their feelings. Relying only on talk-based therapy isn't helpful since it can rigidify existing intellectual defenses instead of facing the pain head on.
Some of my most meaningful moments have been holding clients through their deepest pain, including past sexual assault, incest, the grief of losing a parent, breaking up or divorcing, or trying to unpack their attachment trauma from childhood.
The reason why I'm a true believer in this modality is ultimately a personal one: I didn't cry for close to 20 years until I had my first FBR session and got my mind and heart blown wide open. On the other side of the pain I had been blocking out for two decades was immense relief and more acceptance of the parts of myself that I had been pushing away for so long.
Re-wiring your relational patterns through therapeutic touch
Therapeutic, attuned touch is extremely integral to this modality, and it provides an important corrective experience for many of us who sadly didn't get enough touch and loving acceptance growing up.
For example, being held in loving kindness during your grief can be a profound experience that helps you have an embodied realization of "oh, maybe it's safe to for me to express my emotions in front of other people".
Improved breath function and global awareness
We breathe 20,000 times a day. A nice benefit of doing this work is gaining much more awareness of your own breath pattern and body tension as you go through the day.
From my own experience as a client, I saw improved diaphragm spring and function, lung capacity, and much more attunement to my own nervous system and inner landscape. As a result, I personally experience more mind and body awareness, relaxation, and groundedness through the day now.
Expand your nervous system and emotional range
For a lot of people, our nervous systems can be stuck in a permanent gear— e.g. activation or depression. A breathwork journey explores both strong activation and relaxation states, which can help you improve the range in which your nervous system feels comfortable in.
This work will also help you explore your emotional range in an emergent, embodied way — how comfortable are you with your expression, anger, tenderness, joy, grief, shame, power? These are all part of the human experience.
When people ask me what was my main takeaway from doing FBR for a year in Bali, I like to say "I learned how to be fully alive and present in my body".
